HistoryIT and the Friends of Hog Island’s partnership began in 2019 in order to support the organization’s mission to preserve the legacy of the first Audubon Camp in existence, located in Hog Island, Maine. With limited capabilities to physically preserve their historic treasures, the Friends of Hog Island knew their stories were at risk of being lost forever.
HistoryIT has digitally preserved more than 25,000 historical photographs, scrapbooks, documents, videos, film, curricular materials, camp records and other items. The 60,000 campers who have visited the island, as well as anyone interested in learning more about Audubon and Hog Island’s history, can now explore stories of conservation since 1936 via a digital museum.
“It was such a relief to have all that history finally in one searchable spot for the world to see and to know that it would be available for everyone; whereas before it was in an attic available to no one. It immediately gave all familiar with the camp an ability to learn more about it; those who were researching had a one-stop shop to visit; and it reaches a worldwide audience.”
